Bon odori: Japan's summer festival dance

Where the circle dance of summer festivals comes from, why it happens around Obon, and why anyone can join. JLPT N3 reading with translation.

Translation

When summer comes, "summer festivals" (natsu matsuri) are held in various places throughout Japan. There are shrine festivals, town events, and many other kinds, and one thing often seen among them is the "Bon odori" (Bon dance). A yagura (tower) is set up in the center of an open space, and people form a circle and dance to the sound of taiko drums and flutes.

The origin of Bon odori is said to lie in the Buddhist nenbutsu odori (invocation dance). It is said to have originally been an event held during the Obon period to comfort the spirits of ancestors who had returned, and to see them off. This is why it is held around the time of the summer Obon in many regions. However, there are various theories about its origins and when it began.

Nowadays, beyond its religious meaning, its aspect as an enjoyable event where local people gather and interact has become stronger. It has also become an occasion where people who have returned from afar during Obon reunite with friends and neighbors they haven't seen for a long time.

A feature of Bon odori is that anyone can take part even without special skills. The way of dancing differs from region to region, but many involve repeating the same movements, and they are designed so that even first-timers can dance while watching others. Many people take part wearing a yukata, and anyone can easily join the circle.
