Hanami: how cherry-blossom viewing began
From plum blossoms in the Nara period to Edo-era picnics under the cherry trees: the history of hanami, in Japanese with translation (JLPT N3).
Translation
When spring comes, people gather in parks where the cherry blossoms bloom or by the riversides, and enjoy meals and chatting while looking at the flowers. This is called "お花見" (hanami). Today it is an event for viewing cherry blossoms, but it has not always been about cherry blossoms.
Among the nobility of the Nara period, it is said that they admired plum blossoms more than cherry blossoms. Then, in the Heian period, the focus of flower-viewing shifted to cherry blossoms. According to records, a flower banquet held in Kyoto by Emperor Saga in the early Heian period is known as one of the old examples of cherry-blossom hanami. At that time, hanami was an elegant pastime of the nobility.
It is said that hanami came to be widely enjoyed as it is today during the Edo period. As more people came to live in the towns, places such as Ueno and the area by the Sumida River were developed as famous cherry-blossom spots, and people came to enjoy meals and sake beneath them. It is also said that Somei-yoshino, known as the representative cherry tree, was created during this period.
In addition, in farming villages, it is said that people have long looked at how the cherry blossoms bloom to predict that year's crop yield or to use it as a guide for starting work in the rice fields, and there are various theories about the origins of hanami. The way people relate to cherry blossoms varied by region and by social position.
