Nengajo: Japanese New Year cards
Where New Year postcards came from, when to mail them so they arrive on January 1, and what to send if you are late. JLPT N3 reading with translation.
Translation
Sending a greeting postcard to people who have helped you at the start of the new year, the "年賀状" (New Year's card), is a custom that has existed in Japan since long ago. It is said to originate from "年始回り" (New Year's rounds) in the Heian period, when people went around to the homes of those close to them at the beginning of the year to give their greetings. Eventually, greetings to people living far away came to be conveyed by letter, and after postal postcards were issued in the Meiji era, the present form spread.
It is considered best to have a 年賀状 reach the recipient on January 1, New Year's Day. To have it delivered on New Year's Day, it is safe to send it out by around December 25. Post offices begin accepting New Year's postcards from the middle of December, and those sent during that period are delivered together on New Year's Day.
If you end up sending it late, you send it so that it arrives during the period called "松の内" — in many regions, by around January 7. When even that period has passed, it is usual to send a greeting card called "寒中見舞い" rather than a 年賀状. Also, it is said that adding even a short handwritten line, not just printed text, conveys your feelings better. Recently, more people give their greetings by email or SNS, but the custom of sending postcards also continues.
