Why Japanese trains are so quiet

No phone calls, quiet voices and orderly queues on the platform: the thinking behind everyday train manners in Japan. JLPT N3 reading with translation.

Translation

When you ride a train in Japan, you may notice that many people stay quiet. Railway companies repeatedly call on passengers to refrain from talking on the phone inside the cars and to set their smartphones to silent mode. Even when talking with friends, many people speak in a quiet voice so as not to bother the people around them. This is not a rule set by law, but a custom thought to have arisen out of consideration for others.

Another commonly seen sight is people lining up and waiting their turn. On station platforms, people waiting for the train form neat lines aligned with the door positions. When the train arrives, those getting off come out first, and then the people who were waiting board in order. By letting those who are getting off pass through before boarding, people can get on and off smoothly even when it is crowded.

Behind such quietness and the behavior of lining up, it is said there is the idea that "not only oneself, but also the people around should be able to spend their time pleasantly." Of course, not everyone always follows this perfectly, but such consideration can be seen in many situations.
