Original Japanese explanation
「立つ瀬がない」は、面目が立たず、自分の立場がなくなってどうしようもなくなることをいいます。「安心できる立場を確保する」とは逆で、追い詰められて立つ瀬(足場)を失った苦しい状況を表します。
