Translation

May 5th is "Children's Day" (こどもの日). It is a holiday to celebrate children growing up healthy and strong.

On this day, some households fly "こいのぼり" (carp streamers). A こいのぼり is a large flag shaped like a fish called a carp (こい). They look as if they are swimming through the sky, riding on the wind.

There is an old story about a carp that vigorously swims up a river. From that story, it is said that people began to fly こいのぼり, putting into them the wish for children to grow up healthy and strong as well.

For food, "かしわもち" is often eaten. It is a Japanese sweet (和がし) of mochi wrapped in the leaf of a tree called かしわ (oak).
