Translation

New Year (Oshogatsu) is a very important event in Japan, celebrating the start of the year.

At New Year, people often eat a dish called "osechi." Osechi is arranged beautifully in a square box called a jubako.

Each item of osechi carries a wish. For example, black beans carry the wish "may you spend the year in good health," and kazunoko, which is fish roe, carries the wish "may many children be born."

Also, at New Year, children receive "otoshidama" from adults. Otoshidama is money put into an envelope. It is one of the events that children look forward to.
