- 「葦(よし)の髄から天井を覗く」 is a metaphor for the foolishness of trying to judge great matters with narrow insight. It comes from the fact that you cannot grasp the whole even if you look at the ceiling through the hole of a thin reed stalk. c3 「本質を見抜く」(to see through the essence) is the opposite evaluation; originally it is an expression criticizing narrowness of vision.

「葦(よし)の髄から天井を覗く」は、狭い見識で大きな物事を判断しようとする愚かさのたとえ。細い葦の茎の穴を通して天井を見ても全体は分からないことに由来する。c3「本質を見抜く」は逆の評価で、本来は視野の狭さを批判する表現である。
