Itadakimasu and gochisosama
What the Japanese say before and after a meal, and the gratitude behind the words. JLPT N5 reading with translation.
Translation
In Japan, many people say "いただきます" before a meal. And after finishing eating, they say "ごちそうさま."
These two are words like greetings. It is said that "いただきます" carries a feeling of gratitude toward the life of the food and toward the people who made that food.
"ごちそうさま" also holds a feeling of gratitude toward many people, such as those who cooked the meal and those who grew or caught the rice and fish.
Some people say it while putting their hands together, but the form varies by person and household. It is said that whether in a small voice or only in one's heart, the feeling of gratitude is what matters.
