Ofuro: the Japanese bath and its rules

Wash before you soak and keep the towel out: why the bathtub is for warming up, not washing. JLPT N5 reading with translation.

Translation

A Japanese bath has a "湯ぶね" (yubune, bathtub) filled with lots of hot water. Many people warm their bodies not only by taking a shower but by soaking in this yubune.

Before getting into the yubune, you first wash your body. Or, you pour hot water over your body before getting in. This is an important manner (etiquette).

Why is that? It is because the hot water in the yubune is meant for soaking and warming up in. Especially at hot springs (onsen) and public baths (sento), everyone uses the same hot water. Therefore, you take care not to dirty the water in the yubune.

Washing your body inside the yubune or putting a towel into the hot water is not good. When you soak in warm water, both your body and your mind rest slowly and peacefully.
