Translation

お盆 (Obon) is an event in which it is said that the spirits of deceased ancestors return home once a year. The family welcomes those spirits and then sees them off again.

The timing of お盆 differs slightly by region. In many areas it is held around the 13th to the 16th of August, but in places such as Tokyo it is held in July.

On the first day of お盆, an 「迎え火」 (welcoming fire) is lit in front of the house. This is said to be a marker so that the spirits of the ancestors do not lose their way when returning home. Then, on the last day of お盆, an 「送り火」 (sending-off fire) is lit to see the spirits off.

During this period, 盆踊り (Bon dances) are held in various places throughout Japan. お盆 is an important event in which families think of their ancestors.
