Dango and pampas grass under the harvest moon: what the offerings mean and why tsukimi is a night of thanks. JLPT N4 reading with translation.
Translation
When autumn comes, there is an event called 「お月見」 (moon viewing). On the night said to have the most beautiful moon of the year, people enjoy looking at the moon. The moon on this night is called 「十五夜」 (the fifteenth night) or 「中秋の名月」 (the harvest moon).
On the day of お月見, 月見団子 (moon-viewing dumplings) are offered at a place where the moon can be seen. The round dumplings are said to be made to resemble the round full moon.
Also, すすき (Japanese pampas grass) is displayed together with them. It is said that すすき is displayed in place of the rice that ripens in autumn. お月見 is an event imbued with feelings of gratitude for the things harvested in autumn.
Nowadays, many people enjoy the autumn night while gazing at the moon with their family, even without preparing dumplings or すすき.
