Why people hang wishes on bamboo on July 7, the tale of Orihime and Hikoboshi, and how the custom spread. JLPT N4 reading with translation.

Translation

July 7th is Tanabata. On this day, people write their wishes on thin strips of paper called "短冊" (tanzaku) and hang them on bamboo branches to decorate them. The 短冊 are said to come in five colors: blue, red, yellow, white, and black.

Tanabata has a famous story. Across the Milky Way in the sky live Orihime and Hikoboshi, who can meet only once a year, on the night of July 7th.

The custom of writing wishes on 短冊 is said to be based on something that came from ancient China. The form of decorating bamboo with 短冊 as we do today is said to have spread in the Edo period.

Originally, various stories were combined in Tanabata, and there are several theories about its origin. Today it has become a summer event that both children and adults enjoy by writing wishes.
