JLPT N1Four-character idioms

快刀乱麻

Meaning
鋭い刀で乱れた麻を切るように物事を鮮やかに解決すること
Explanation
「快刀乱麻(を断つ)」 comes from the image of slicing through tangled hemp threads in one stroke with a sharp sword, and means handling and resolving a tangled, complicated problem briskly and brilliantly. It is used in scenes of cutting through a difficult issue in one stroke. c1 and c4 merely describe the actions of the sword or hemp literally, missing the metaphorical core of 「splendidly solving a difficult problem」.
Original Japanese explanation

「快刀乱麻(を断つ)」は、よく切れる刀でもつれた麻糸を一気に断ち切る意から、複雑にもつれた問題を鮮やかに、てきぱきと処理・解決することをいう。難題を一刀両断にさばく場面で使う。c1・c4 は字面どおりに刀や麻の動作を説明したもので、「難問を見事に解決する」という比喩的な核心を外している。
