Gomi no bunbetsu: sorting garbage in Japan

Burnable, non-burnable and recyclable: why the rules differ by city and what to check when you move. JLPT N4 reading with translation.

Translation

In Japan, when you put out garbage, you separate it before putting it out. This is called「分別」(separation).

The ways of separating include, for example,「燃えるゴミ」(burnable garbage),「燃えないゴミ」(non-burnable garbage), and「資源ゴミ」(recyclable garbage). You separate it like this: food scraps and paper are burnable garbage; bottles and cans are recyclable garbage. There is also a saying,「混ぜればゴミ、分ければ資源」("Mix it and it's garbage; separate it and it's a resource"), and when separated correctly, many things can be used again.

What is important is that the way of separating and the day for putting out garbage differ depending on the town you live in. Even within the same Japan, the rules differ by city or ward, so when you move, you must check the rules of that town.

Also, garbage cannot be put out on just any day of the week. You put it out on the day designated for each type. In some towns, there are places where you must use a designated bag. Following the rules leads to keeping the town clean.
