Temiyage: bringing a gift when you visit
What to bring, when to hand it over, and why you take it out of the paper bag first: Japanese gift etiquette. JLPT N4 reading with translation.
Translation
When you visit someone's house, you sometimes bring a gift. This is called a "temiyage." Sweets, fruit, and the like are often chosen.
There are several customs for handing over a temiyage. In most cases, you hand it over not at the entrance (genkan), but after being shown into a room and exchanging greetings. When it is something that should be refrigerated quickly, you may also hand it over at the entrance, saying "It's something cold."
Also, it is said to be polite to take a temiyage out of its paper bag or furoshiki before handing it over. The idea is that since the paper bag is something for carrying the item without getting it dirty, handing it over still in the bag is not good. The paper bag or furoshiki, after the item is taken out, is often carried back home by yourself.
These customs come from the feeling of thinking about the other person. They are a thoughtful consideration so that the other person can receive it pleasantly with a "please, here you are."
