Chopstick manners in Japan

Sashibashi, mayoibashi and other things not to do with chopsticks at the table. JLPT N5 reading with translation.

Translation

In Japan, we often use はし (chopsticks) when eating. There are several things you must not do in the way you use はし.

For example, it is not good to stab into food with はし to eat it. This is called さしばし. Also, it is not good to move はし around above the food, holding them while deciding which dish to eat. This is まよいばし.

Furthermore, pulling a faraway plate toward yourself with はし is not good manners either.

When you learn the correct way to use them, the people eating with you will not feel uncomfortable. Using はし neatly is an important manner.
